Rotary sends TODYS to Panto
The Rotary Club of Barnard Castle donated £720 to TODYS (Teesdale Opportunities for Disabled Youngsters), which enabled them to send more than 30 youngsters, carers and family members by bus to see 'Jack and The Beanstalk' at Darlington Civic Theatre just before Christmas.
Before setting off from Teesdale Sports Centre, Santa Claus, who bore a striking resemblance to one of the Rotary Clubs' members, handed out boxes of chocolates and panto tickets to the youngsters.
Rotary President Peter Webb said, as the bus left for Darlington, ' We are delighted to be able to help TODYS, as the Rotary Club is highlighting helping youngsters in the dale this year, and this was a very nice opportunity'.
Joan Bailey, of TODYS, said,' We were really pleased to get this donation from The Rotary Club, as, whilst we do fundraising ourselves, we are so busy looking after the youngsters, we really don't have the time'.

Rotary Club holds 1940's theme Christmas Meeting
In what is now becoming an annual tradition, The Rotary Club of Barnard Castle held their final meeting of the year in Romaldkirk Reading Room, where the theme was 'The 1940's'.
Members and guests went to a great deal of trouble to locate clothes and accessories relating to the 1940's, and we had a range of civilian attire; the housewives with head scarves, the spivs with Black Market goods; to military outfits of Army, Navy and Air force, from the U.K., Holland, U.S.A. and Germany.
As part of the entertainment this year, a number of Rotary members performed a 'Dads Army' sketch, dressed in 'Winter Warfare' costumes and including all of the favourite characters; Captain Mainwaring, Sergeant Wilson, Jones, Godfrey, Frazer, Walker, Pike, and Mrs Pike. The script was written by Sergeant Wilson (better known as Gerald Blake), and it was clear to all that he had been wasting his time all those years as Professor of Geography at Durham University, as his script writing abilities are brilliant!
Rosemary Thompson and helpers served a full Christmas dinner, no doubt somewhat bemused by the startling appearance of some of their customers.

Rotary gives to Alzheimer's Society
The Alzheimer's Society benefited by £1000 recently, when the Societies Area Officer Lucy Hudson visited The Rotary Club of Barnard Castle, and talked about the disease and its' effect on the sufferer and carers alike.
Lucy told Rotarians that the Society commits itself to defeating dementia through research. The programme has three themes - cause, cure and care. The search for cause and cure gives hope for the future, while research on care ensures that they are delivering the best help for the present.
